HYPERHIDROSIS
What is excessive (underarm, palms and soles) sweating?
Excessive sweating is a medical condition known as "Primary Hyperhidrosis." This condition results from overactive sweat glands which produce far more sweat than required for normal cooling needs of the body. If you suspect you might have hyperhidrosis you can take the self assessment test at Botox website http://www.botoxseveresweating.com/underarm_sweating/self_assessment.aspx before scheduling your appointment.

What are the treatment options?
There are a few treatment options for hyperhidrosis:
-
Antiperspirants/deodorants: OTC and prescription antiperspirants work by blocking sweat ducts, reducing the amount of sweat reaching the skin. Most antiperspirants use mettallic salts including aluminum chloride hexahydrate. Sometimes these can cause skin irritation and can be destrutive to fabrics.Deordorants help control body odor which results from a reaction between sweat and bacteria. The deororants make the skin more acidic thus inhibiting bacteria.
-
Surgery: Surgery is usually reserved for the most extreme cases that do not respond to other treatments. The most commonly utilized procedure for hyperhidrosis is called "Endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy ETS". It is done under general anesthesia and the surgeon attempts to disrupt the nerves between spinal canal and sweat glands of axilla. Specialized training is required for this type of surgey and may result in excessive sweating from other areas of the body.
-
BOTOX TREATMENT: Botox is FDA-approved for excessive underarm sweating, inadequately controlled with topical agents. Botox injections temporarily block the chemical nerve signals that stimulate the sweat glands. Without the nerve signals, there is reduction and even cessation of sweating.
