A chemical peel is a type of skin treatment which uses a chemical solution to peel off the superficial layer of skin. The newly regenerated skin is usually smoother, less oily, with fewer fine lines than the old skin. There are different types of chemical peels for superficial, medium or deep peeling. Chemical peels should be performed by an experienced physician or under direct supervision of an experienced physician.
Alpha hydroxy acid peels
Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) are naturally occurring organic acids such as Glycolic and Lactic acids in sugar cane and sour milk. AHA’s are the mildest of the peel formulas and lead to a very superficial peeling for treatment of fine wrinkles, areas of dryness, uneven pigmentation and acne. AHA"s hydroxy acids can also be formulated in lower concentrations as part of a daily skin-care regimen to:
- Improve the skin’s texture.
- Reduce signs of sun dammage
- Reduce fine lines
- Reduce uneven pigmentation
- Control of acne
- Smooth rough dry skin
AHA products may cause stinging, skin redness and mild irritation.
Beta hydroxy acid (BHA"S) peels
Beta Hydroxy acids have the ability to penetrate deeper into the skin than AHA’s. Studies support that BHA peels are slightly better than AHA’s in removing dead cells and controling oil, acne and sebum.
Jessner’s peel
Jessner’s peel is specialized peel which combines salicylic acid, lactic acid and resorcinol. It can be customized to individual needs for a medium depth peel.
Retinoic acid peel
High concentration of Retinoic acid can be used for a superfiical peel alone or in combination with another peel to improve peel results for certain skin conditions without increasing peel depth.
Trichloroacetic acid peels
Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) can be customized to individual patient’s skin type by changing solution concentrations from 10-50%. Depth of penetration is controlled by concentration from intermediate to deep with higher concentration. There is a high risk of scarring with concentrations higher than 35%.Trichloroacetic acid peels:
- Are suitable for darker-skinned patients over other deep peels like Phenol
- Smooth fine surface skin lines.
- Remove superficial blemishes.
- Correct skin pigment problems.
- Sometimes may require pre-treatment with Retin-A or AHA creams.
- Repeat treatments are needed to maintain results .
- Require sunblock as part of skin care routine for several months.
- May take several days to heal depending on the peel depth
I our office, Dr. Malik performs all chemical peels. Our peels are done mostly for Acne and Acne scarring. We use superficial to medium depth peels custom mixed for each patient.
Anesthesia
Medium peels like TCA are a bit more painful than AHA peels. TCA peels often do not require anesthesia because the solution itself has a numbing effect on the skin. The patient usually feels a warm or burning sensation. We routinely use a chiller to cool skin during the procedure to minimize burning associated with application of peel solution. Patient may choose to take Ibuprofen or Tylenol before the procedure to minimize discomfort. Dr. Malik has years of experience with chemical peel treatments on all skin types which has led to consistent results with few if any side effects.
